Step 1 of 3
Before Surgery Preparation
A few days prior to your scheduled procedure you will receive an email to your portal with pre-admission questions. Your answers will be reviewed by Anesthesia and a medical professional.
Before your procedure
A nurse from the center will contact you prior to your surgery to review your health history, medications, and time of procedure. Notify your surgeon if there is a change in your physical condition such as a cold, fever, or respiratory problems. If your child is the patient, please be careful to enforce these instructions, and follow any other special instructions your surgeon may have given you.
Failure to follow these instructions may result in cancellation of your surgery.
Eating, drinking & getting home
For additional safety guidelines you can refer to the WHO surgical safety checklist.
- 6hours
- You may have solids up to 6 hours before arriving at the surgery center.

One week before surgery

- STOP taking any aspirin products — they increase your chance of excess bleeding during surgery.
- STOP taking any Motrin (ibuprofen) or related non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- STOP taking most herbal supplements.
- STOP taking supplements believed to be detrimental to your pre-surgery health, including: St. John’s Wort (may have MAOI effects), ephedra or Ma Huang, kava kava, licorice, pennyroyal, germander, chaparral, borage, coltsfoot, comfrey, life root, sassafras, aristolochia fangchi.
- STOP taking supplements that act as blood thinners and increase the chance of excessive bleeding during surgery, including: ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginseng, dong quai, willow, red clover.
- STOP taking Vitamin E — it too can increase the risk of excess bleeding during surgery.
Ask before stopping
- If you have been prescribed Coumadin or Warfarin, ask your prescribing physician for permission.
